A daring transition:From homelessness to college

Circles of East Texas is crowded with people who have overcome hardships while striving to climb the ladder out of poverty to reach self-sufficiency.  This particular scenario rings true for a 20-year-old woman, who just over a year ago, was homeless with her three-year-old daughter.
“Susan” was receiving help through the Longview Interfaith Hospitality Network when she learned about Circles of East Texas.
As soon as she found stable housing Susan began attending the Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By-World sessions in September 2010 while working full-time.  During the months she attended Getting Ahead she realized her need for a GED in order for her to continue moving forward.
Upon her graduation from Getting Ahead last March she wasted no time in seeking assistance from the East Texas Literary Council to prepare for her GED exam.  She passed the exam in May.  She has now received verification of impending financial aid and will start college this autumn. She has gone from homelessness to college in just over a year.
Anyone wishing to support others like Susan should consider becoming an Ally, providing meals for Circles, Wal-Mart gift cards or making monetary donations. For more information, please call 903.237.1019 or visit longviewtexas.gov.
