Downtown ArtWalk grows

In its short history, the Downtown Tyler ArtWalk has grown from an attendance of 300 to more than 1,000, and its growth continues with new artists, venues and activities at the next event, which is set for Thursday, March 3, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at a variety of downtown venues.
Twenty-three visual artists will be featured at 11 venues during the event, which turns downtown businesses and buildings into “instant art galleries” for the evening. Media includes watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed media. Photographers and ceramicists will also display their work.
Among the interesting exhibits will be artwork rendered on non-traditional canvases, said City of Tyler Main Street Program Director Beverly Abell. “This artist stretches his own canvases and forms them into irregular shapes,” Abell said. “We think our art patrons will be intrigued by this new artist.”
A new musical guest, Rambellwood, will perform from 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. at the T.B. Butler Plaza. The FLYKids dance troupe will also perform. Ballet Tyler will offer educational opportunities during the event.
Another new feature is a “found art” interactive sculpture project. String, tape, glue and “miscellaneous junk” will be provided to enable the public to attach “found” items to a sculptural form that will be placed at the plaza. The public is encouraged to bring along items to include in the sculpture project, Abell said, adding that volunteers will be on hand to facilitate the process.
“This ‘found art sculpture’ will be a fun, engaging feature of ArtWalk,” Abell said, “and we couldn’t do it without the partnership and volunteer work of Tyler Lofts and the ArtWalk steering committee.”
Finally, the Film-making group of the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition will do a demonstration of how three-dimensional animation is made.
The demonstration will be conducted by Steve Self of N-Ventive TV.
In Buy addition to the ArtWalk, Thursday will also mark the opening of the new “Still Life” exhibit at Gallery Main Street. The public can meet the artists whose work is featured in the show; Best in Show will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
The Downtown Tyler ArtWalk is a project of the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition, which is a committee of the Heart of Tyler Inc. and the City of Tyler Main Street Department. Those who want more information should call (903) 593-6905 or go to www.downtowntylerarts.com.
