EOC reaches out to college students

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) of the Texas Association of Developing Colleges (TADC) will be holding weekend seminars to prepare upcoming college students for the challenges awaiting them in higher education when they start classes in the autumn of 2011.
Director of Programs Marilyn Richardson reports that the busy, income tax period of mid-February through mid-April is very demanding for the TADC.
“It’s at that point that students begin filling out financial aid applications–specifically the federal application or FAFSA.  Our office is unable to keep up with the demand for appointments to assist in filling out the FAFSA or in applying for admission to college during regular hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00,” she said.  “We’re open the first Thursday of each month until 7:00, but even that doesn’t do much to avoid three- to five-week delays in scheduling clients.  We will be open March 19, April 30 and May 21 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  We will not schedule appointments, but will serve clients on a first-come, first-served basis.”
As a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the EOC is intended to assist those hoping to enroll in vocational schools, universities and colleges.  Through this agency prospective students can apply for admission, register for applicable college entrance exams, apply for financial aid, identify scholarship resources, and have explained to them defaulted student loan reconciliation.  Counseling is available to those still undecided on their majors.
Residents of Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Panola, Rusk, Smith, Upshur and Wood counties receive these services free of charge.  The office is located in Longview at 2009-C Mobberly Avenue across the street from LeTourneau University.  For further information or to make a scheduling appointment please call (903) 757-9660 or e-mail Richardson at marilyn.richardson@txadc.org.  Certain income documents are required when filling out the FAFSA.
