Good Shepherd Medical Center has named Lawrence T. Verfurth, DO, MBA, FACOI, as its new Chief Medical Officer.
Dr. Verfurth, who joined the Good Shepherd staff earlier this month, is a visionary physician executive with a broad base of operation and clinical leadership spanning the spectrum of healthcare. He most recently served as Vice President/Chief Medical Officer at Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, IL.
Presence Mercy consists of a 220-bed acute hospital, 70-bed mental health hospital, and an extended care facility, serving a community of 200,000 residents.
“Dr. Verfurth brings proven leadership skills to Good Shepherd, and his experience in improving programs and services in both turnarounds and new endeavors will assist us in creating a stronger culture within the hospital,” said Steve Altmiller, president and CEO of Good Shepherd Health System. “He will provide a continued focus on service and clinical quality care and develop many new opportunities for success for our organization’s physicians, staff, and most importantly, our patients.”

Dr. Verfurth received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (Downers Grove, IL). He performed his internship and was Chief Medical Resident at Chicago Osteopathic Medical Centers, where he received the Internal Medicine Resident of the Year Award. Dr. Verfurth graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois Benedictine College (Lisle, IL) and also holds an MBA degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI).
Dr. Verfurth is Certified in Internal Medicine by the State of Illinois and as a LEAN Specialist by the University of Illinois. He is also a member of the American Osteopathic Association and American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (FACOI).
Dr. Verfurth and his wife, Virginia, are enjoying life in East Texas with their five children and Maggie, their chocolate labradoodle.
