Heritage scholarship competition to break record Saturday

LeTourneau University expects a record number of top high school students to compete for full-tuition scholarships in its annual Heritage Scholarship Competition Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, on the university’s Longview campus.

Approximately 126 of the best and brightest high school students spanning the globe will compete in the invitation-only event.  Ten full-tuition scholarships will be awarded, totaling more than $1 million.

“Record participation indicates LeTourneau’s global reputation of excelling in academics and integration of Christian faith,” said Terry D. Cruse, vice president for enrollment services. Cruse added this year’s participants range geographically from Longview to Germany, spanning several nations and more than 30 states.

The Heritage Scholarship is the university’s premier scholarship, which fully covers tuition costs per semester and is renewable for up to eight semesters, as long as winners maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 and meet scholarship requirements. The winners of the 10 scholarships will be announced in early February.

To qualify for the competition, these high school students had to have score a 1260 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT and have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.6.

The average Heritage Scholarship competitor this year had a 1385 combined Math and Critical Reading score on the SAT, a 31 on the ACT  and a high school/home school GPA of 3.9 on a 4.0 scale.  These students represent the top one-half of one percent academically among high school students, and many will be named as National Merit scholarship finalists who could choose to attend any university in the country, Cruse said.

Heritage Scholar candidates compete by submitting resumes and participating in personal interviews with LeTourneau University faculty, staff, and trustees, as well as competing in a judged team exercise.
