Longtime business owner inducted into the Tortilla Industry Association 2013 Hall of Fame

p align=”LEFT”>Ramiro Deleon Roel, founder of La Fama Foods, in Longview, will be inducted into the 2013 Tortilla Industry Association’s Hall of Fame at the association’s annual conference and trade exposition May 10-11 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

The Tortilla Industry Association (TIA) was created in 1989 to serve the emerging tortilla industry. Annual sales of tortillas exceed all other ethnic and specialty breads and are the fastest growing segment of the baking industry in the U.S.

La Fama Foods was founded by Ramiro Roel in 1982 with the help of his wife. The Roels had only one three-row tortilla machine in the beginning. Cooking 300lbs. of corn a day they were able to produce about 20-25 cases of tortillas. With only tortillas in their line of products they begin to distribute in the Longview, Texas area with just a few customers.

Expansion came slowly at first eventually progressing into the Dallas, Houston and Shreveport markets. Roel made all the deliveries himself until the company’s business grew to a point they could hire a driver. With hard work and good customer service, the Roels’ family owned company began to make a name for itself and draw attention to its Longview bakery. La Fama Foods, Inc. was incorporated in 1986.

Ramiro Roel continues to run the family owned business with a second

generation now overseeing every aspect of the operation. La Fama Foods, Inc. operates 6 lines cooking several thousand pounds of corn each day. The product line now includes corn tortillas in multiple sizes, colors and thicknesses, flour tortillas in different sizes and thickness, wraps, chips, taco shells, chalupa shells, masa and tamales. La Fama Food’s market reaches 14 states with a large distribution network of trucks and food distributors.
