Sharon Rettig, Counselor at Longview High School has been named Counselor of the Year by the Piney Wood Counselor Association, a division of the Texas Counseling Association. Rettig is a career educator and consultant with 20 plus years in the educational arena. For the past 20 years, She has addressed taking care of students holistically. Her focus has been on all learning levels with recent emphasis in children’s social and behavior skills with research in Relational Aggression.
She has used her expertise as an intervention/prevention specialist, from counseling in a Montessori Pre-K – 2nd setting to counseling in the juvenile detention field. She currently is the counselor with Longview Global High, T-STEM Academy in the Longview Independent School District. In addition to counseling, Sharon has taught English and sociology in the public secondary schools, and coached tennis and basketball.
Targeting behaviorally at-risk children, has led her to develop and present workshops addressing various topics, including nurturing growth and development and communication. Rettig has led professional seminars, worked with teachers, professional organizations and health care agencies addressing social behavior, negative emotions and violence in and out of school.
Rettig holds a B. A. from Louisiana Tech University and a M. Ed. from Stephen F. Austin University. She attended Sam Houston, University of Texas, holding certifications in Secondary English, sociology, kinesiology with professional certificates in mid-management administrator and counselor.
