East Texas Review

Cornyn points to funds

by ETR Staff Report

Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) is advising his state's fire departments to apply for grants made available to finance the hiring of additional firefighters and funding their work. The grants are being provided by the Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, which is part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants under the Grants Programs Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Office of Grants and Training. This program is providing approximately $210 million for fire departments nationwide. Cornyn is upbeat about the future of the operation.
"The men and women on the front lines of emergency response need more support than ever as they work to keep our communities safe," he said. "I encourage local fire departments in Texas to apply for this important funding, and will assist throughout the application process."
SAFER makes it possible for fire departments to hire additional personnel in hopes of improving their staffing depth and resultant ability to effectively deploy during emergencies. This planned-for 24-hour deployment ability with adequate manpower will insure Texas communities will enjoy the maximum possible degree of safety from fire hazards. SAFER funding will also provide for the recruiting and retention of volunteer firemen.
Grant applications can be made until December 18, 2009. For additional information visit http://www.firegrantsupport.com/. call (202) 224-2581 or go to Andrew Blaylock@cornyn.senate.gov.
