Pine Tree ISD hires new director of bands

The Board of Trustees of Pine Tree Independent School District approved Mark Melton as the new Pine Tree High School Director of Bands at the regular board meeting Monday, May 9, 2011.  PT’s previous Director of Bands, David Rollins resigned in February.
“I am very excited to have been selected Director of Bands for Pine Tree,” Melton said.
“It is my personal goal to make this year exciting and rewarding for all the student members of the Pine Tree Bands.  I look forward to finding out about their interests, helping them to excel and to reach their goals.”
Melton ends his 23rd year at Union Grove ISD this year.  Under his direction, the Union Grove bands have earned 20 consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Awards and Best in Class honors at the Winter Park Ski Festival.  Awards also included Best in Class honors at the Gilmer Yamboree and NAMMB marching contests.    Union Grove bands also consistently earn top finalists honors in the Outstanding Performance Series and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) honor band competition. Prior to Union Grove, he taught in Lufkin and Spring Hill ISD.
“I have been successful in building the Union Grove band into a perennial state contender in marching and concert competitions with 3 appearances at the state marching contest in 8 years,” said Melton.  He described his teaching style as, “military marching with a lot of interesting twists.”
Melton has taught clinics on a variety of topics including: Successful Teaching Techniques for Small Schools and How to Style a March for the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters, and Oklahoma Band Masters.  He is in demand as an adjudicator and as All Region band clinician.  In addition to providing instruction, Melton also serves as a mentor to many young band directors in the East Texas area.
Melton graduated from Kilgore High School and Stephen F. Austin University.  School experiences included a two-year all state trumpet player and three-year trumpet section leader at SFA.  He and his wife, Lyric Lyon Melton, have three children.  He enjoys golf, sporting clay shoots, snow skiing and cooking.
In other business, the board recognized the Duke Scholars Award Winners and High School Leadership Class.  Melinda Burns, Board President announced that James Skeeler would be serving as Acting Superintendent until the new Superintendent was selected.  And Skeeler provided updates on attendance, dress code and student insurance.  Discussion also included a possible agreement with Spring Hill ISD to share use of the Discipline Alternative Education Placement (DAEP) campus called, PACE.
