Pine Tree to celebrate Arbor Day

Pine Tree ISD is proud to host the annual Arbor Day Event sponsored by Keep Longview Beautiful, with a tree planting in the Pine Tree Primary School playground on Friday, April 27, 2012.  The public is invited to attend.  Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Founded in the United States in 1872, the holiday is celebrated on the last Friday in April each year.

“We are very happy to have the shade of a new tree on our new campus,” said principal Becky Balboa.  “It provides a great symbol: as the young tree grows big and strong over the years, so will our children who start their journey in education with us here at PT Primary School, home of the youngest pirates.”

This year’s celebration includes a special presentation by Pine Tree ISD Kindergarten students and a dedication of the tree to Mr. James Ogg, one of the past Superintendents serving Pine Tree ISD.  Ogg was responsible for guiding the Pine Tree schools toward becoming an independent school district in 1948.

Looking back, PTISD grew out of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, still located in its original site on Pine Tree Road.  The founders discussed ideas for organizing the church and school under the shade of a cluster of pine trees in October 1847.  It is believed that some of the first classes took place under those trees as well.  Since that time, the district’s reputation for quality education has attracted steady enrollment.  Today Pine Tree Independent School District consists of seven campuses with a total enrollment of over 4,700 students.  Pine Tree Schools – where we believe in “A Tradition of Excellence for All” – is accredited by the Texas Education Agency and by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.

“We thank the City of Longview’s Keep Longview Beautiful for their environmental initiative to remind us of the importance of planting a tree,” said Superintendent TJ Farler.
