Buckner and Children Family Services have joined forced with the East Texas Food Bank to end summer hunger for children. The formidable duo will ensure no child is left hungry this summer.
Between June 10 and Aug. 8, approximately one hundred volunteers from 9 local churches will join to make sure any child 18 years old and younger will receive free lunches from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm at two Summer Food Program sites located at the Belaire Manor Apartments, 1501 East Young Street. It is hoped that 80 children will be served each day.
This Summer Food Program will serve children in low-income communities who participate in free and reduced food programs during the school year. The Program is important because it fills the hunger gap and makes certain that no child goes hungry during the school summer break.
According Jane Ann Crowson, program director, Buckner Family Hope Center of East Texas, Buckner exists to serve vulnerable children and families. The summer feeding program gives Buckner the opportunity to engage with individuals while strengthening families. It is important to note, one in four East Texas children are at-risk of hunger according to one East Texas Food Bank statistics. Therefore, Buckner and the East Texas Food Bank are not only providing meals throughout the summer, but also hosting nutrition and parenting classes at both feeding program locations.
