Tyler library to host storytellers’ extravaganza

The Tyler Public Library will celebrate April Fool’s Day appropriately by scheduling its first “Liars Contest” for the first of that month at 7:00 p.m.
To be held against the backdrop of the Azalea and Spring Flowers Trails the two-day event will be a celebration of the typically beautiful East Texas springtime and the region’s oral heritage.  The storytellers will be entertaining listeners of all ages.
Sheila Starks Phillips is a native Texan who holds membership in the Traveling Artists Roster of the Texas Commission on the Arts.  She is past winner of the John Henry Faulk Award that Denton’s Tejas Storytelling Association presents annually to whoever does the most that year to further and maintain the art of yarn spinning in the Southwest.  She will be at the library relating tales that are humorous, stories that are folk tales, stories that teach lessons, family stories and assorted original stories that audiences suck up with relish.  Three times she has won the Houston Liars Contest, and is now set to become Tyler’s biggest teller of entertaining fables.
At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday the second the event will resume with Phillips and others from the East Texas Storytellers Guild holding forth with some of the most outrageous, entertaining and unforgettable tall tales ever heard.  The day will enter its last chapter at 7:00 p.m. with cowboy and Celtic music by the medicine without prescription Gillette Brothers, winners of the 2009 American Cowboy Culture Award.  Phillips will present one last story at 8:00 p.m.
This program, titled “Azalea Tales,” is made possible partly by the Doc Moore Educational Outreach of the Tejas Storytelling Association.  Entries for the contest must be entered my Monday, March 21.  The library is located at 201 South College Avenue.  For more information on this delightful celebration of spring call (903) 593-7323 or visit www.TylerLibrary.com.
