Wellness Pointe’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program was recently awarded 50 blankets from Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need.

The award request was spearheaded by Wellness Pointe employee Carole McKinney, who has received assistance from Project Linus in the past. “I learned of Project Linus while my husband was in the Navy,” she said, “I was given a blanket after I gave birth to our daughter – My husband was deployed when our son was born and I received another blanket after I gave birth to my son.”

Last year during a regional meeting in Austin, Carole learned that another WIC office had been awarded blankets from Project Linus for their breastfeeding program. Upon arriving back at work, Carole began researching award opportunities: “I got in contact with a Linus Project affiliate out of Tyler, and Wellness Pointe was eventually awarded fifty blankets!”

A Breastfeeding Coordinator for WIC, Carole and her colleagues decided to offer Project Linus blankets to breastfeeding mothers. In order to incentivize breastfeeding to WIC participants, the blankets will be available to mothers who participate in WIC’s breastfeeding program in either Longview or Kilgore for more than thirty days and continue to exclusively breastfeed. “We hope our participants cherish their Project Linus blankets as much as I have cherished mine!”

Carole said. For more information regarding breastfeeding, contact the WIC office at 903-212-4835 or go to: http://texaswic.dshs.state.tx.us/wiclessons/splash/or http://www.breastmilkcounts.com/.
