Dorcas Dunlap-Jackson, M.Ed., has dedicated over 25 years to the children of Longview, walking every path in education from Instructional Assistant to Principal—all within Longview ISD. A proud Longview High School alumna, she earned her BAAS from Stephen F. Austin State University and her M.Ed. from University of Texas at Arlington. Today, she brings her experience and passion to JL Everhart Magnet Elementary, where she leads with heart and purpose.

At Everhart, Dorcas’ academic vision centers on rigorous, student-centered instruction. Her priorities are clear: strengthen Tier 1 instruction, ensure alignment to standards, close achievement gaps, and foster literacy and fluency across all subjects. Every goal is anchored in high expectations for all students, with a relentless focus on growth.

Supporting teachers is at the heart of Dorcas’ leadership. She believes in professional development that evolves with educators’ needs, instructional coaching, and collaborative PLCs that spark reflection and improvement. Classroom walkthroughs, data meetings, and feedback cycles ensure teachers feel supported while maintaining excellence.

Moreover, student progress is carefully tracked beyond standardized tests. Formative assessments, progress monitoring tools like IReady and MClass, student work analysis, and classroom observations allow Dorcas and her team to respond quickly and effectively to students’ needs. For those who struggle academically, Everhart implements a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), small-group instruction, WIN time, tutoring, and close collaboration among teachers and support staff. Every student receives intentional, timely assistance.

In addition, inclusion is woven into the school’s fabric. Differentiated instruction, close collaboration with Special Education and ESL staff, and tailored accommodations ensure that diverse learners have access to grade-level content. Social-emotional learning is equally valued, with daily integration into instruction, character education, restorative practices, and Positive Behavior Intervention Systems, creating a safe and nurturing environment for every child.

Even more, Dorcas fosters a culture of collaboration where open communication guides decisions on academics, behavior, and social-emotional supports. She recognizes the challenges—bridging learning gaps, boosting student engagement, and supporting teachers in a dynamic learning landscape—but meets them with data-driven strategies, empathy, and high expectations.

For Academic Dean Dorcas, the joy of working at Everhart comes from being part of a family-oriented community committed to excellence. Watching students grow academically and personally, while supporting teachers in their professional journeys, fuels her passion. Here, collaboration, continuous improvement, and life-long learning aren’t just ideals; they are the daily rhythm of a school where every student and educator can thrive.
