A SPOTLIGHT ON IB TEACHERS.

Apr 21, 2026

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a challenging, worldwide education program for students ages 3–19. It focuses on critical thinking, well-rounded learning, and understanding different cultures. The program includes four stages, ending with the two-year Diploma Programme (DP) for high school students, which helps prepare them for college and life in a global society.

Coach She-Ron DeLoach: From PE to Global Awareness: Teaching the IB Way

By JOYCELYNE FADOJUTIMI

Coach She-Ron DeLoach is the Elementary Physical Education teacher and Director of The PE Club at Ware East Texas Montessori Academy. With 29 years of experience, she has worked with students of all levels to develop healthy habits, teamwork skills, and a lifelong love of movement. According to DeLoach, she chose an International Baccalaureate (IB) program because it focuses on developing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally and aligns perfectly with her teaching philosophy.

Why IB Stands Out

According to DeLoach, the IB program is distinguished by its commitment to creating globally minded learners. It nurtures inquisitive, reflective, and compassionate students, emphasizing both academic growth and character development. In physical education (PE), this means teaching skills and fitness while fostering teamwork, perseverance, and respect.

Fostering Critical Thinking

IB encourages inquiry and reflection. In PE, she supports this by helping students set personal goals, reflect on performance, solve problems during games, and collaborate to find strategies that lead to success. This nurtures independent thinkers who take ownership of their learning.

Preparing Students for Global Challenges

IB teaches empathy, open-mindedness, and responsibility. Students learn to appreciate different perspectives and understand their impact on communities. Through discussions on wellness, teamwork, and fairness, as well as community service projects via The PE Club, students connect learning to the real world.

Supporting Students Through Challenges

High expectations can be challenging. Hence, DeLoach creates a safe, encouraging environment where effort, growth, and teamwork are valued over perfection. She adapts all activities so all students can participate and feel successful. Moreover, she integrates technology and pop culture to make learning relevant and engaging.

Balancing Rigor with Well-Being

Students thrive when supported and motivated. In PE, she encourages challenges while emphasizing healthy habits, movement, and mental well-being. Effort is celebrated, teamwork is emphasized, and students earn “PE Bucks” for achievement and citizenship, which they can spend in their PE store.

The Future of IB Education

Deloach believes IB will continue to grow as schools recognize the importance of preparing students for an interconnected world. Its emphasis on critical thinking, collaboration, global awareness, and real-world learning will help students become thoughtful, adaptable leaders.

Why DeLoach Loves Her Job

Coach DeLoach cherishes building meaningful relationships and helping students grow in confidence, teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. According to her, Ware ETMA campus culture is supportive, valuing both academic excellence and holistic development. Through The PE Club, students gain lifelong skills and the joy of giving back to their community.
