Extended Children
Story by Glenn Miller
GOD’S WORD: “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who has love has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-8
Several years ago, I came home late, and my wife asked me to send home anyone at our house who wasn’t family. Upstairs, I found my daughter Lacey and her three friends—the Four Musketeers—laughing together. I told them, “Anyone not related to me must go home.” The girls protested, saying they were like family because I loved them all as my own.
I found myself deeply moved by the accuracy of that statement and by their recognition of its significance. As a result, I made an exception to my initial decision and allowed them to stay an additional thirty minutes. Upon reflection, I realized that when my daughter Lacey visited their homes, their parents likely shared similar sentiments about her presence.
It’s a good feeling. It’s a GOD feeling. I know I wouldn’t hesitate protecting, nurturing or caring for any of these “extended daughters,” just as I know the other parents felt the same about my child.
God’s love for all His children is a lot like that. It’s unconditional and yes, it’s universal. Through the Holy Spirit and the sacrifice of Jesus, God’s only Son, we are made children and heirs to the riches and bounty of God’s kingdom. We can lay claim and call Him “Abba Daddy” with intimacy and humbled honesty. We know that He loves us and will always be there, no matter what.
And best of all…we can stay in His presence as long as we want.
